Environment minister Mokonyane loses cabinet post

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress said environment minister Nomvula Mokonyane will lose her Cabinet post and be redeployed to a senior position in parliament.

Mokonyane’s demotion comes after she was accused in testimony at a state inquiry of taking bribes, an allegation she denies.

The ANC has also decided to appoint Thandi Modise as speaker of Parliament, Lechesa Tsenoli as her deputy and Pemmy Majodina as its chief whip, Ace Magashule, the party’s secretary-general, told reporters in Cape Town on Monday. Job Mokgoro was retained as premier of the North West province.
