DURBAN – The KwaZulu-Natal leg of the BRICS Business Council kicked off at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban on Saturday evening.
Present at the event was the MEC of Human Settlements Ravi Pillay, the Chairman of the BRICS Business Council Dr Iqbal Survé and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela.
The BRICS Business Council Skills Challenge was launched at the first event of the BRICS Business Council in Durban.
Chairman of the BRICS Business Council Dr. Iqbal Survé spoke on the importance of training young people in South Africa. He said that young people are gold and they need to be trained in various skills in order to work in the different sectors.
According to Survé, young people make up 41% of the world’s population and more than 50% of that number are under the age of 35. MEC for Human Settlements Ravi Pillay who was representing the KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu said that through BRICS South Africa is embarking on a new journey.
The MEC also spoke about the growing sectors in South Africa including manufacturing, the car industry, and agriculture.
Buti Manamela, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education highlighted the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He said that one of the major things emphasised around the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the threat of technology to jobs. According to the Minister, any form of revolution should be to the benefit of people.
The BRICS Skills Challenge which was launched in 2017 was officially handed over to South Africa in March this year. The South African BRICS Skills Challenge will take place in Johannesburg in September.
