Acsa welcomes Ramaphosa’s announcement on partial lifting of domestic flights restrictions

The Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) has welcomed Sunday night’s announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the partial lifting of lockdown restrictions regarding domestic flights in level 3 which comes into effect on June 1.

The coronavirus pandemic halted all air travel as government closed borders and inter-provincial travel in a bid to stem the spread of the virus.

Ramaphosa says accommodation and domestic air travel will still be prohibited for leisure, and will only be allowed for business purposes. This will be phased in on dates to be announced.

Acsa has sought financial support from the National Treasury, asking it to finance up to R11 billion of new debt by 2025.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says African airlines could lose up to $6 billion in passenger revenue this year due to the pandemic.
