Ajay Gupta wants to cross-examine Mcebisi Jonas

Lawyers for Ajay Gupta plan to submit a formal application to cross-examine former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas after his damning testimony at the state capture commission of inquiry, which implicated the controversial Gupta family in wide-scale corruption.

Deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo, who chairs the commission, said on Tuesday that lawyers for Ajay Gupta indicated that they plan to submit an application to cross-examine Jonas and former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor on Friday.

Meanwhile, Zondo said former President Jacob Zuma and his son, Duduzane, have yet to decide whether they will make a formal application to cross-examine Jonas and Mentor.

Zuma and his son have been implicated in damning state capture allegations by Jonas and Mentor in their testimonies to the commission. Zuma will give an indication on Friday on whether he will make a formal application.

If Zondo approves Ajay Gupta’s application to cross-examine witnesses, he too may be required to take the stand at the commission to provide testimony and be cross-examined.
