Mboweni to discuss economic challenges facing the country

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni says COVID-19 has had a huge negative impact on the South African economy. The minister was speaking as part of the centennial celebrations of the African Rotary Club.  

The club was established in Johannesburg in 1921.  

The minister will discuss economic challenges facing the country in his opening speech for the club on Sunday. 

COVID-19 has caused havoc all around the world. It has caused a lot of suffering here in South Africa. Many people are dying, many people are getting sick and therefore, this has made it very difficult for us to meet physically. So, its my duty to welcome you to South Africa virtually, to welcome you to this centennial conference and to congratulate Rotary on this magnificent achievement.

This as South Africa has recorded 1 385 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 574 370.

The country has also recorded 59 new COVID-19-related fatalities. This brings the total number of deaths to 54 125.

“Eastern Cape 3; Free State 8; Gauteng 30; KwaZulu-Natal 13; Limpopo 5; Mpumalanga 0; North West 0; Northern Cape 0 and Western Cape 0,” says the Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, in a statement.

The recovery rate remains at 95% and 10 508 510 tests have been conducted to date countrywide. Of these, 26 934 were undertaken overnight.
