Parliamentary committee endorses Tsakani Maluleke as next Auditor General

Tsakani Maluleke – South Africa’s deputy Auditor-General (AG) – on Tuesday received the backing of parliament’s ad hoc committee on the appointment of the AG to take over the top post at the crucial Chapter Nine institution.

The committee “unanimously” recommended that Maluleke replace outgoing AG, Kimi Makwetu, when his term ends in November, according to the Parliamentary Monitoring Group.

Maluleke is now officially the front-runner for the post following the committee’s endorsement. If appointed, she will become South Africa’s first female AG. However, her appointment is still subject to final approval by the house (National Assembly).

Nevertheless, the National Assembly is likely to be rubber-stamp her recommended appointment, especially with Maluleke getting the backing of both the ANC and opposition parties in the committee.

Maluleke, who is a trained Chartered Accountant (CA SA) and current non-executive chairperson of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica), has more than 20 years of experience in the private and public sectors.

According to Saica’s website, in her position as current deputy AG, she is the first woman to hold this executive position in the AG SA’s more than 100-year history. She was appointed deputy AG in 2014.
