Free data for Cell C clients after ‘unprecedented’ outage

Cell C’s network was down for more than two hours on Saturday after Eskom load shedding caused the air conditioning to fail in a key data centre.

According to the operator, the data centre experienced a power surge due to load shedding, which then tripped the air conditioning.

This then resulted in an MPLS — or multi-protocol label switching — network, which routes traffic on Cell C’s network, to overheat and power down.

Cell C said on Twitter that additional generators had been deployed and the MPLS equipment restored to service.

“Customers are urged to restart their devices as service restoration is in progress,” Cell C said on Twitter at lunchtime on Saturday.

To apologise for the “unprecedented” downtime, the company said it will provide all customers with 1GB of data valid for five days.

“We will notify you when the data will be loaded. Again, our sincere apologies,” it said.  — (c) 2018 NewsCentral Media
