JOHANNESBURG – Huawei today launched their new flagship device, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro at their international launch held in London at the ExCeL Centre.

The impressive device is powered by the Kirin 980, the new powerful chip system that Huawei said will result in the next evolution of mobile artificial intelligence (AI).
Huawei consumer Business Group South Africa CTO, Akhram Mohamed, presented the new device to selected media outlets last Friday at Huawei’s office in Sandton.
Mohamed described the Mate20 Pro as a product for higher intelligence and added that they are especially proud of the phone’s battery and power capabilities.
One of the more impressive features of the phone is the ‘device to device’ wireless charging feature, which allows you to wirelessly charge another device with the Mate 20 Pro, irrespective if it is a Huawei product or not.
The Mate 20 Pro boasts some impressive camera functions. It has three camera lenses, a 40-megapixel primary sensor lens, 20-megapixel secondary sensor, and an 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle sensor.
The third camera is an impressive macro lens which allows you to photograph small subjects at very close distances, which is auto enabled. As you move the phone closer to a smaller subject, the AI of the phone will kick in and switch to the macro lens feature.
The camera has an optical zoom of up to 5X, whereas previous smartphones were only capable of an optical zoom of up to 3X.
Powered by the Kirin 980 AI chip set, video recording has been taken to another level with the Mate 20 Pro, according to the company.
You can record or take an image of a subject in black and white while the background remains in colour, something that no other smartphone camera could do previously.

The performance while recording has been improved as well, as the AI 4D predictor will segment the moving subjects in your shot, using machine learning, to ensure that all the moving subjects remain in focus while recording throughout your video.
The device also boasts facial recognition and an improved performance on image recognition.

The Hivision function of the phone is something that health freaks can look forward to, or if you are an art buff.
You can take a picture of a food item and then simply swipe up on the image to reveal the nutritional value of the food item.
It will include the weight, what the food item or meal is, as well as the number of calories,  energy, carbs, fat and other nutritional information to help manage your health better.
There is also a database of 10 million famous paintings that Huawei is able to access, so when you take a picture of a painting, you can find out who painted it, when it was painted and further additional information about the painting.
Battery and Power
The Mate 20 Pro will be powered by the biggest battery Huawei has ever put into a phone.
Mohamed said, on the battery capabilities of the smartphone, “We have led the market and have done so once again. The battery is also safety certified, after various tests. With our new 15 watts wireless charger, which we have tested, surpasses Apple’s wired charging system time by 100%.”
This means in the time it will take you to charge your Apple device, the Mate 20 Pro will already be charged up and ready for you to use.
The Mate 20 Pro can also charge any other smartphone that is capable of wireless charging, irrespective if it is a Huawei device or not, with its new device to device wireless charging function.
With the new supercharge facility which is what Huawei called their new smart charger, you will be able to obtain 70% battery life from a 30-minute charge session.
Projection:
With the Mate 20 pro, it gives you the ability to wirelessly project on to a smart TV, PCs, and laptops.
Huawei said that others smartphones only give you the capability to do it only in phone mode, while with Huawei, you are able to do it in a phone screen mode and a desktop mode as well.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has the home button removed and it now has an in screen finger-print sensor, with a 6.4inch 2k resolution display which is Ip68 water and dust resistant.
The Phone has an onboard memory of 128gb with an added  6gb and expandable storage as well.
Huawei also launched their new smartwatch at the event.
The GT watch boasts an impressive standby time of 14 days with a single charge.
Mohammed said, “I have tested the new watch and ran all the apps continuously and after a full charge, I got a total of 8 days of battery life from the watch.”
Availability:
The new devices will be available a week after the international launch and pricing will be announced when the devices are launched in South Africa.
