Gauteng municipalities urged to apply to have Eskom debt scrapped

The Gauteng Provincial government is calling on municipalities to apply to have their debt with Eskom scrapped.

This is one of the resolutions put forward in order to deal with the current challenges faced by various municipalities over debt management.

This as several municipalities around the country have around R57 billion in total debt owed to Eskom.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi was speaking at the Energy Indaba at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Thursday.

“We are also pushing very strongly that the debt that is owed to Eskom must be scrapped because Eskom’s debt has been scrapped by National Government. So we can’t scrap your debt and people that you owe, you are not scrapping.” Lesufi says.

“So Eskom has started a process where municipalities must apply why their debt must be scrapped. So we pressurising municipalities to do so and we are pressurising Eskom to respond speedily to those municipalities.”
