Nehawu slams Ramaphosa over 3% increase for public office bearers

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for signing off a 3% wage increase for all public office bearers.

The below-inflation wage increase follows recommendations from the Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers for a 3.8% increase.

This means cabinet ministers, judges, traditional leaders and Members of Parliament will receive increases for the 2022-2023 financial year.

Nehawu national spokesperson, Lwazi Nkolonzi says, “As Nehawu, we are not satisfied with what President Ramaphosa has done. We are angered about this decision that he has taken. We would have preferred zero-percent. We do not believe that public office bearers deserve a salary increment.”

“Because they are the ones that have brought the crisis that SA is confronted with. So, by rewarding them with 3%, what are we saying? Imagine how much a minister, deputy minister, deputy president or a judge earns in this country and we are giving them 3%, amid the challenges that ordinary South Africans and workers have due to the cost of living in this country,” adds Nkolonzi.
