North West province targets BRICS Roadshow for investment in agriculture, tourism

The North West provincial government says the BRICS 2023 Roadshow will position the mining province to attract significant investments in other sectors including agriculture and tourism.

The BRICS 2023 Roadshow is being held in the Potchefstroom based JB Marks Local Municipality, as part of the national drive to create awareness around the significance of South Africa’s role as Chair of BRICS and preparations ahead of the BRICS Summit to be held in August.

MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Galebekwe Tlhapi says, “We are not only the mining province, we do have the red meat production in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. We also have the tourist attraction across the province. We all know that we do have a big Sun City [Resort] and we also want to get people to also invest in our tourist attractions.”

“So as a province, we’re also going to present at BRICS. Because we’re also going to form part of BRICS to present to them [and] tell them that we do have minerals in the province but we [are] also rich in other things like your agriculture,” adds Tlhapi.

Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco)’s Ben Joubert says South Africa has positioned itself to use its position as BRICS chair to champion global reforms.

“There are 200 meetings we are having this year and the friends of BRICS meeting as we [are] going into the summit from 22 to 24 August. BRICS is definitely championing the interests of the global south and ensuring a more inclusive, multilateral environment for every country of the world system. So, the expansion debate is something that South Africa is driving as chair this year,” adds Joubert.
