Rhino poaching in SA falls 11% in first half of this year

The number of rhinos poached in South Africa, which has the bulk of the world’s population of the endangered animals, fell 11% to 231 in the first half of the year, Environment Minister Barbara Creecy said.

The poaching of the animals moved away from the Kruger National Park, where 42 were illegally killed, to the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal and private reserves, she said at a press conference in Pretoria, the capital, on Tuesday. In KwaZulu-Natal 143 were poached and 46 were poached in private reserves elsewhere, she said.
