The Property Pod: Top 5 for 2022

This latest episode of The Property Pod is a short, sharp wrap of the top five podcasts for 2022.

If you’re not a regular listener, this podcast comes out every two weeks on Moneyweb, and we chat to leading executives, analysts, and developers in South Africa’s property industry.

The top listened to Property Pod for 2022 was our interview with Gavin Lucas, CEO of Stor-Age Property REIT on 16 August. He spoke about the booming self-storage property sector. Stor-Age is the only pure-play self-storage property fund listed on the JSE and has operations in South Africa and the UK.

The second most listened to Property Pod for the year was a podcast on navigating higher interest rates. We interviewed the CEO of bond-origination group ooba, Rhys Dyer on 11 October. That was before the last repo rate hike by the Reserve Bank in November and interest rates are sure to be a hot topic for the property sector broadly again in 2023.

Our third top podcast on The Property Pod in 2022 was one from the beginning of the year. It was on the 1st of February and was with Estienne de Klerk, CEO of Growthpoint Properties South Africa, who also chaired the SA Real Estate Investment Trust Association (SA Reit).

At the time he shared his insights on the sector and his expectation for the year. In the new year, 2023 that it, we will have to get an update from him or one of the other heavyweights heading a SA Reit.

In fourth place, one of the top-listened-to Property Pods of 2022 was with property magnate and developer Vivian Reddy, about the multi-billion-rand Oceans Umhlanga development, north of Durban. The podcast, published on 7 June, specifically focused on the hotel component, the five-star Radisson Hotel Umhlanga which opened at the time.

Since then, the Oceans Mall component opened in November this year at a cost of R1.3 billion.

Rounding off the top five Property Pods for 2022 on Moneyweb, was the interview with Mauritian-based property pundit Kevin Teeroovengadum on 10 May. It was titled real-estate investing in Africa and the transition from the mighty dollar.

Teeroovengadum spoke about the dollarisation of African real estate assets and why he believes it’s important for the continent to transition to local currencies when investing in the sector.

Thank you for listening to The Property Pod this year. All the best for the festive season and New Year. Our first Property Pod for 2023 will be broadcast on 10 January.
