Treasury chief Mogajane to leave post in June

South Africa’s Treasury Director-General Dondo Mogajane will leave his post at the end of his contract on June 7, the finance ministry said on Thursday.

Mogajane planned “to pursue new opportunities outside of the public sector,” the ministry said in a statement, without going into further detail.

A process to recruit a new director-general had already started, the ministry said.

Mogajane has worked for the National Treasury for 23 years, with the last five years as director-general.

“He has been a dedicated and committed leader who has guided the department in delivering on its mandate of ensuring fiscal sustainability,” the ministry said. “He is leaving at a time when public finances are recovering from the Covid-19 induced shock.”

In its annual budget unveiled in February, the Treasury said it expected public debt to peak sooner and at a lower level than earlier thought, as mining tax receipts support revenues.
