TechCentral’s top 5 podcasts in October – what did you miss?

TechCentral’s interview with newly appointed EOH Holdings CEO Stephen van Coller, who joined the listed IT service group from MTN, was the publication’s most popular podcast in October 2018, according to statistics from platform partner iono.fm.

Van Coller, who joined EOH on 1 September, explained why he decided to take on the role and what his plans were for the business. He talked about his background in corporate and investment banking and in telecommunications and how that expertise would be brought to bear at EOH.

An interview with Explore Data Science Academy co-founder Shaun Dippnall on the launch of Explore 10X, a programme to develop new fintech businesses in South Africa, was the second most popular podcast in October. Launched in partnership with Rand Merchant Investment’s AlphaCode, the programme intends selecting 20 aspiring fintech entrepreneurs and taking them through rigorous mentorship and training to develop their ideas into businesses.

A discussion with Andre van der Veen, outgoing CEO of e.tv and Openview parent eMedia Holdings, rounded out the top three last month.

Van der Veen spoke about South Africa’s long-delayed digital terrestrial television migration project and explained why he thought it was possible to complete the migration programme by 30 September 2019 and what would be needed to meet that deadline.

In fourth spot was an interview with Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder and CEO of Vivaldi Technologies, which develops the fast-growing PC Web browser Vivaldi. Von Tetzchner, who co-founded Opera Software and was CEO of the Norwegian company until 2010, talked about why he quit Opera, why he founded Vivaldi and where the project is going.

Rounding out the top five in October was episode 239 of the long-running TalkCentral podcast, hosted by Duncan McLeod and Regardt van der Berg. In the podcast, the pair spoke about Cell C’s comments at a Competition Commission inquiry into the data services market about Vodacom’s roaming relationship with Rain, and why Cell C believed the arrangement should not be allowed.

Other topics covered included the latest on digital migration; Standard Bank launching an MVNO; the Internet Service Providers’ Association wanting the mobile operators to open their networks; Huawei launching the Mate 20 Pro (and other smartphones); and Adobe releasing a new version of the Creative Cloud.
