Cape Town-focused fibre-to-the-home infrastructure operator Vumatel said it is now the third-largest fibre provider in the country, behind Openserve and Vumatel, after reaching 100 000 homes passed.

The company, which connected its first homes in Sea Point in 2016, said it achieved this despite focusing only on Cape Town and surrounds. It has now expanded further afield to areas such as Melkbosstand and Somerset West and is passing an additional 4 000 homes a month. It hasn’t said how many of the homes passed have signed up for services.

In the past six months, Octotel has added the suburbs and towns of Lakeside, Muizenberg, Zandvlei, Marina Da Gama, Capricorn, Wynberg, Observatory, Rondebosch, De Waterkant, Somerset West, Strand, Buh-Rein, Zonnendal and Melkbosstrand to its network.

The company’s senior network architect, Rory van Zyl, said it expects to reach 150 000 homes passed in the next year. It is also working with communities to connect CCTV cameras and provide free fibre to local schools.  — © 2019 NewsCentral Media
